4 Things You Should Know Before Starting Invisalign Treatment

Lots of older teens and adults put off getting orthodontic treatment because they aren’t looking forward to showing off a mouthful of metal brackets and wires. The good news is that Invisalign is available to help patients achieve an aligned smile without taking away from their appearance. However, it’s important that you are both committed and well-informed before you begin your treatment. Here are some things that you should know about Invisalign.

You Might Require Attachments

Your Invisalign treatment may include attachments. These are enamel colored ridges that stick to your teeth like braces would. They are there to help the Invisalign aligners click into place so the teeth can move more effectively. Even if you aren’t wearing your aligners, these attachments are difficult for others to detect.

Invisalign Requires a 22-Hour Wear Time

When you have Invisalign, it’s important that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day. You should wear them pretty much all the time – except when you are eating, drinking, or cleaning your teeth. If you aren’t wearing your aligners enough, your teeth won’t move as effectively, and your treatment could be prolonged.

You Will Need to Brush More Often

If you keep up a good oral hygiene routine now, you are used to brushing your teeth twice and flossing every day. However, when you have Invisalign, you will need to clean your teeth more often. Every time you take your aligners out to eat or drink, you will need to thoroughly brush and floss before putting them back in. This means three or more times a day depending on how often you enjoy meals and snacks.

Invisalign Attachments & Trays Can Stain

If you like having a cup or two of coffee in the morning, or a glass of red wine at night, you could end up with some unsightly stains if you aren’t careful. Remember that you should be removing your aligners before enjoying any food or beverage that isn’t water. Because Invisalign attachments stain, you should rinse your mouth and brush after you finish your drink. You may also want to use a straw to reduce the amount of contact that the liquid has with your teeth.

Invisalign is an excellent solution for those who have misalignment. Just remember the things listed above. This way, you will be fully prepared to start your treatment out right!
